New Brunswick Aboriginal Workplace

Essential Skills Project

The New Brunswick Aboriginal Workplace Essential Skills (NBAWES) project is designed to strengthen the skills, knowledge and attitudes that Mi’kmaq and Maliseet adults need to succeed in today’s workplace. Adult learners in Miramichi and Fredericton will spend 34 weeks with teachers and coaches improving their literacy and employability skills. To meet the distinctive needs of First Nations adults, the programs in both locations will have clear First Nations identities in terms of content and orientation.

The Joint Economic Development Initiative (JEDI) is a nonprofit organization launched in 1995 to stimulate economic development in the Aboriginal communities (both on-reserve and off-reserve) in New Brunswick. In early 2010, JEDI received funding from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada Office of Literacy and Essential Skills to create New Brunswick Aboriginal Workplace Essential Skills (NBAWES) as a pilot project starting in the fall of 2010.

Essential Skills are the skills needed for work, learning and life. They provide the foundation for learning all other skills and enable people to evolve with their jobs and adapt to workplace change.

Through adapting existing Workplace Essential Skills curriculum to meet the needs of Mi’kmaq and Maliseet adult learners through culturally relevant content, the NBAWES Pilot Project will work to improve literacy skills among the Mi’kmaq and Maliseet populations in NB in a thirty-four week course.
